Our Campus Superstar – Janie Johnson!

We’re so excited to congratulate Musical Theatre BFA Janie Johnson, first-place winner of the 2018 Indiana Campus Superstar, sponsored by the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at Indiana University.

IU Theatre audiences have seen Janie on our main stages in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Jesus Christ Superstar, and most recently, as Hope Cladwell in the Fall 2017 production of Urinetown.

Campus Superstar includes 3 rounds of competition: the auditions, the semi-final competition and the final show. Contestants prepare a musical piece of their choice for the first round of auditions. The Semi-Final Show was held at Bloomington’s own Buskirk-Chumley Theater, from which the judges chose 10 finalists to select a Broadway show tune to perform at the Final Show. Janie performed “My Man” from Funny Girl at Newfields in Indianapolis Sunday night and was the audience favorite, winning the title of Campus Superstar 2018, which includes a $5000 prize!

About her experience with Campus Superstar, Janie said, “The people I met were the best part about Campus Superstar. The Hillel team, the producers, the judges, were all incredible to work with.”

The 10 finalists were:
Terica Anthony
Quentin Beverly
Taira Beverly-Jeffries
Shaquile Dwight Hester
Quynn Hickey
Jaylah Jarrett
Janie Johnson
Maddy Sylvester
Julia Thorn
Shai Warfield Cross

Of her fellow performers, Janie said they were “as kind as they were talented – which was out of this world. We grew to love one another during the rehearsal process and I will treasure each new friendship I gained.”

And what will Janie do with the well-deserved windfall? Not surprisingly, she volunteered enthusiastically that a good portion of the money will most likely go to student loans. One might say “easy come, easy go”, but we know how much work it takes to create such talented young performers. Congratulations to all the finalists and to our own Janie Johnson!
