IU Contemporary Dance collaborates with revered choreographers in annual dance concert: Leading Edges

December 8, 2015

Bloomington, Ind – The Indiana University Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance is rigorously preparing works by cutting-edge choreographers, Kyle Abraham and Angie Houser. The two works will highlight an evening of eight original dances, featuring over 50 IU students.

“Our vision for the dance program is intentionally broad. One year we might bring European contemporary ballet, and the next we’ll bring in more of an experimental New York aesthetic,” says IU Contemporary Dance Director Elizabeth Shea. “We want our students to experience a vast spectrum in their training, and we hope that at least one point in that spectrum speaks to them, personally.”

This year’s Winter Dance Concert, titled Leading Edges, is a celebration of new approaches and voices in American dance.

BESSIE Award winner Angie Houser visited IU’s campus to collaborate with undergraduate students on Undertakings in Three Parts. A member of the Bebe Miller Company, Hauser specializes in new movement research, and strives to include the individual voices of her dancers in the creation of her work.

New York City-based Kyle Abraham’s self-described “mellifluous fluidity” is a conscious mashup of hip-hop and classical styles. Radio Show is a piece inspired by the loss of black-oriented radio in his hometown, Pittsburg PA. Abraham.in.Motion company member, Jeremy “Jae” Neal visited IU to teach this cutting edge work to students.

Also representing the professional dance world are performers in IU Contemporary Dance Director Elizabeth Shea’s Flawed; Connie Dinapoli, Adriane Fang and Arturo Garcia will bring their considerable experience and artistry to the stage in this work with music by Jacobs School of Music Professor of Music Composition Don Freund.

Leading Edges will also feature original works by Iris Rosa, the director of the African American Dance Company at IU, as well as IU Theater and Contemporary Dance faculty, Nya McCarthy-Brown, Selene Carter, Stephanie Nugent and George Pinney.
