IU Theatre Brings “Urinetown” to BTown

August 25, 2017

Bloomington, IN – The Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance will open its 2017-18 Season with the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Urinetown. With music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Greg Kotis & Mark Hollmann, and book by Greg Kotis, Urinetown mixes a suite of upbeat rollicking showtunes with a searing commentary on the dangers of populism, bureaucracy, and corporate greed.

Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is a wickedly irreverently satire of capitalism, social irresponsibility, the legal system, and musical theatre itself. Set in a Gotham-like city where a terrible water shortage has led to a ban on private toilets, citizens must now pay to use public toilets or risk severe punishment from the corrupt, corporate-bought government. Enter a young hero, Bobby Strong, with a revolutionary plan which will ensure that everyone can PEE FOR FREE! Urinetown’s dark comedy, catchy music, and socially relevant themes have made the musical a cult-classic.

Following its debut at the New York International Fringe Festival, Urinetown was produced Off-Broadway at the American Theatre for Actors in 2001. In September 2001, the musical moved to Broadway, running for 25 previews and 965 performances and winning three Tony Awards: Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical.

The creative team behind Urinetown includes director and choreographer Kenneth L. Roberson, who previously directed the IU productions of Into the Woods, Sweet Charity, The Drowsy Chaperone and Dames at Sea. Roberson is once again partnering with musical director Terry LaBolt, a professor of practice in the BFA Musical Theatre program, who provided musical direction for Dames at Sea this past summer. The creative team also includes CJ Sneath (Technical Director), Ryan Miller (Scenic Designer), Tony Stoeri (Lighting Designer), associate professor Andrew Hopson (Sound Designer), and faculty costume designer and head of the Department’s Design and Technology area, Linda Pisano.

Urinetown’s sixteen member cast is completely comprised of Musical Theatre BFA undergraduate students, led by IU senior Jimmy Hogan as hero Bobby Strong.
